Cmo Podra Usted No

Es un da despus de muchos das de tormentas. Siendo lavado y
lavado, el aire brilla; los cmulos apilados pequeos soplan a
travs del cielo; una ducha visible contra los abetos douses las
azafranes. Sabamos que sucedera un da esta semana. Ahora, cuando
aprendo usted ha muerto, voy a la puerta abierta y miro a travs New
Hampshire y veo que all, tambin, el sol es brillante y las nubes
estn haciendo sus maneras vagas a lo largo del horizonte; y pienso:
Cmo no habra podido ser hoy? En otro sitio, Keri Te Kanawa est
cantando el Laudate Dominum de Mozart, muy dbilmente, como si en el
pasado, a los que se sentaron una vez en el asiento de acero de la
vieja mquina de siega, descendiente alegre de la guadaa del reaper
severo, y dibujaron los pequeos tringulos de intercambio de las
barras cortadoras a travs de la hierba para hacer que los tallos se
acuestan en sol. Podra usted haber caminado en la obscuridad
temprano esta maana y encontrarse crecido totalmente cansado de los
xitos y de las faltas de la medicina, de su ao del dolor y de la
desesperacin ahora y despus remitidos brevemente por la esperanza
que tena ese gusto de plomo? Usted glimpse en primer encendi el
mundo como usted lo am y ve que, ahora, l no deba mal morir y
que, al morir, usted dejara su querido en un da como paraso?
Cerca de salida del sol usted afloj su asimiento un poco? Cmo no
habra podido usted sentirse ya bendecido para bueno, teniendo estos
das pasados hablados su corazn entero a l, que le habl su
corazn entero, de modo que en el silencio l no se sintiera una
sola palabra faltaba? Cmo no habra podido usted deslizarse en un
encanto, en luz del da completa, como l pone al lado de usted, con
sus brazos alrededor de usted, como han sido, l debe haberse
parecido, toda su vida? Cmo no podra su mejilla presionar un
momento a su mejilla, que se presiona el tuyo de ahora encendido?
Cmo podra usted no levantarse y no ir, con todos que se encienden
en la ventana, esos brazos alrededor de usted, y el sonido, viniendo o
yendo, duro decir, de un plano del solo-motor en la distancia que
ninguno otro oye?
