Ok, so how do you know if a company is legit. This seems to be the question that is always poppin up in my mind everytime I get an opportunity for a booking or a shoot. Is there a site or possibly a book I can read that will give me advice on this topic? Does anyone know?
I would greatly appreciate any help with this issue. I've wanted all my life to become a model but unfortunately keep running into illegitimate companies. How do you know?................Thanks for all the help! :)

Now that's a toughie. My experience is in film, not fashion, but I guess some of the same rules apply:
Usually if they ask you for money - they're dodgy - legit agencies take a percentage.
Legit companies usually work with contracts of employment.
There is usually a professional directory (you may be able to get your local library to get one in) - check if they have a listing.
Check if they are guild affiliated - there is usually a guild or body that tries to fight for your rights as an artist.
Google them.
Know the source - Where did the booking come from? This is why most people only work by recommendation.
The reason people get conned, is that these people are usually quite clever and good at lying. Even people legit in the film industry are usually not the most honest. Just be aware and try to protect yourself. You will learn you will develop a good nose for the dishonest.
I wrote a blog on dodgy film-makers:

Thanx for the info Jen! ;)
I'm sure your absolutely right about being able to weed out the bad from the good. It'll just take some time and maybe a few "trial-n-errors" but I'll get there! You never find what your looking for right away. I'll be sure and check out your blog too! Thanx again :)
