Why Artist Love to Paint

Posted by Nicholas Cameron on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at 2:32:45 PM

Let us pretend, for a moment, that we are not painters and explore why artists love to paint.

For this we shall imagine walking into a magnificent art exhibit--whereupon entering, the first piece of art that grabs us, and gravitates us, we transform with its variety of colors and are convinced by it's realistic portrayal of a 'cartoon reality.'

As we see this masterpiece, we reflect upon its colors. We see how these individual colors have gathered, and the overall picture reflects--and embraces our many emotional experiences.

Now envision the canvas quietly hidden behind this magnificent masterpiece.

And imagine this 'canvas' as 'infinite possibility,' and see how the colors, what we believe, have masked this canvas and recreated what we perceive as our conditioned reality.

When we realize that we are painting upon a canvas of infinite possibility, we comprehend why those who love to paint, do.

I have read and been told by artist friends of mine that in fact a skilled artist sees or visualizes his painting on the blank canvas before he/she even starts their first stroke. That is not to insinuate that they are limited but that they are that clear on what they what the result to be. I actually write my music in a similar way. I'm not saying it is a work of art. I hope that it is but the listener can decide that. But I do complete what I set out to do. So I can see how this could be applied in a 'life sense'. I like the way you portayed this approach Nicholas. Thanks!

I think an artist paints because he/she has to.  I write because I have to.  My son sings because he has to.
I know this is a pretty simplistic outlook, but its my first reaction to your comment, lol
